OPSU Closes for Recognition of Juneteenth National Independence Day

Oklahoma Panhandle State will commemorate Juneteenth as a university holiday on Monday, June 21. The university offices will be closed.

Following the passage of a bill establishing Juneteenth National Independence Day as a federal holiday, to be celebrated annually on June 19^th, OPSU will observe the holiday on Monday, as offices are closed on Fridays in the summer.

Juneteenth is a historical celebration to commemorate the day in 1865 when enslaved black people in Texas learned of their freedom guaranteed by the Emancipation Proclamation. The day has been celebrated across Oklahoma and the United States for generations, and now will be recognized as a federal holiday.

The Juneteenth National Independence Day is a time to reflect and move forward with OPSU’s mission of progress through knowledge and promote our values of diversity and inclusion, and to celebrate all that makes our campus community great.
