OPSU Upward Bound Completed Summer Program

The OPSU Upward Bound Program completed its summer after a 6-week program. The 9th-12th grade students took classes such as Science, English, Mathematics, Computer, History, Leadership, Foreign Language, Professional Skills, Career exploration, Mental Health, and some electives.

The program targets three high schools from Texas County: Hooker, Guymon, and Texhoma. This year, there were 25 students who participated in the Summer Program. These Upward Bound students participate in an after-school program during the school year. During these sessions, the students receive essential information about professional skills and career exploration.

During the program’s last week, the Upward Bound students went on an educational trip to San Antonio, Corpus Christi, and Odessa. They had the opportunity to visit colleges and museums and went to a conference called Hispanic and Latinx College Summit 2022, hosted by the University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB).

Director of Upward Bound, Sonia Hernandez commented, ” I am so proud of our Upward Bound students. They exceeded our expectations during the Summer Program. I also want to thank the important collaboration of all the Instructors and staff.”

Dean of the Academic Resource Center, Sarah Green stated, ” I am so proud of Sonia Hernandez and the Upward Bound Staff. They put together a fantastic summer program, and the students who participated in the program will be a step ahead of their peers. The Upward Bound students were able to experience a taste of collegiate life, and their experiences have lit a fire and facilitated an attitude of belonging and a belief in their abilities.”
